For more tha a hundred years, scientists and researchers have gathered information from hospital records about patients' illnesses and causes of death. Because people have many different symptoms and conditions, a standard system of diagnosis codes has been developed for recording them. A coding system provides an accurate way to collect statistics to keep people healthy and to plan for needed resources, as well as to record morbidity (desease) and mortality (death) data.
